Find Easy Savings in the Deli Department

1/31/2016

Fancy Cheeses
If you are serious about saving money, then one cost-saving tip to consider is skipping the Deli Department counter altogether when you're grocery shopping.

In fact, I can probably literally count on the fingers of my hands the number of times I’ve stopped to buy anything there over the past two decades.

The reason is that t
he prices there are often substantially greater than they are for the same or a similar product elsewhere in the store. For a single person or couple, it might not seem like a big deal, but for a family, the price difference can really add up.

And I've also never understood why people would want to stand on line to get a product that is available to them in another department of the grocery store with no wait time and for a much lower cost.

It just makes no sense to this practical, frugal-minded person at all.

How Your Budget, Food Portion Size, and Your Health Are All Related

Huge Food Portions
So, the other day I was standing at the meat case of the grocery store when I heard a voice to my left.  “I could eat more than a whole pound of it myself, so we need to buy more than that…”

I looked around to see a group of three young, very large, adult males standing in front of the beef section, holding a package of steak in their hands. They were obviously trying to calculate how much they needed for the meal they were planning.

I have to say that my mind seized a bit at the notion of anyone eating more than a pound of steak in one go, so I had to remind myself to close my mouth because it had dropped open in astonishment.

A Food Budget Hint for Small Households That Works for Bigger Households, Too

1/17/2016

Picture
Lately I’ve noticed a trend at the grocery store that seems to be gaining steam.

It’s individual portions of meat and fish, sometimes pre-seasoned, stuffed, or otherwise prepared.

This is in addition to the packages of single-serve prepared meals in various display cases around the store, as well as small packages of prepared vegetables in the produce section.

I’ve even seen individual potatoes wrapped in plastic!

Grocers and food producers are using clever marketing strategies to cater to single people and small households, a large demographic in this country.

Now, y
ou typically pay a substantial premium for smaller packages of just about anything, just as you do for even the tiniest bit of labor that goes into any food prep. And I'd be willing to bet that mark-up in price accounts for the shelf space these items are increasingly taking up.

4 Simple Strategies to Help You Find More Savings in Your Budget

1/10/2016

Finding and Keeping More Savings
Most of us want and need to save more money than we currently do, but sometimes it seems like a daunting, even impossible task.

Here I’ll share a technique that I’ve used many a time over the years to help me “find” “extra” dollars I did not realize I had, dollars that I can put towards a savings goal I have in mind.

The 365 Day Savings Gimmick That Can Help You Set Aside $668

1/4/2016

Picture
This is gimmicky, but super simple way to save $668 in a year. And heck if it can help someone get started on this whole savings thing, then I say go for it. This is how it works:

It begins with 1 cent a day on day one, then 2 cents a day on day two, 3 cents a day on day three, 4 cents a day on day four, and so forth, until on day 365, you save the grand sum of $3.65 on that last day.

So, literally, you are putting aside mere pennies that add up to $667.95 by the end of the year. This is a nice tidy sum to save using a method that anyone can follow.

It's Not How Much You Earn That Matters So Much

1/3/2016

Picture
Recently Quartz published an article about high wage earners who have less than a year’s salary in savings even after working for a substantial period of time.

It made me shake my head a bit and sadly wonder how people can live like that. I sincerely hope that they all are lucky enough to hold their jobs for decades, and/or have very generous pension plans that will tide them over in old age. Otherwise, they are in deep trouble.

But the article did not really surprise me at all.

After all, I know several people of modest means - not high earners at all -- who have managed to save and buy themselves a comfortable retirement -- even an early one.

And, by contrast, I know a couple, who made a combined income of more than $300K fifteen years ago, but faced ruin and homelessness in recent years due to their unwise and indulgent money habits.

The truth is, what a person makes in salary, wages, or earnings often has less to do with  financial comfort or security than you’d think.

How to Successfully Set and Meet Your Personal Goals

1/2/2016

Picture
The new year has arrived, and now that the parties and celebrations are over, it’s of course typically a time to re-evaluate aspects of our life and make new resolutions for the coming twelve months.

But I’ve learned the hard way over the years that it makes no sense to set dramatic, sweeping, overly generalized goals all at once that I am unlikely to meet. That’s a recipe for failure and feelings of guilt and personal inadequacy that nobody needs.

And that applies to goals you set at any time of the year, and not just New Year's.
