Some Ideas to Help You Break Your Budget Busting Bottled Water Habit.

2/21/2016

Bottled Water Is A Waste of Money
Whenever people ask me how I manage to keep my grocery bill so low (typically around $30 per person for a week’s worth of groceries), I usually mention two things right off the bat that have saved me thousands of wasted dollars over the years:

I don’t shop without making a menu plan and a list, and I don’t buy bottled drinks at all, including water.

For beverages, we drink almost exclusively water from the tap in my house.

In fact, I can think of few worse rip-offs in the grocery store than the commercial water products.

The fact of the matter is that the bottled water industry has carried out one of the most brilliant marketing campaigns in modern consumer history --  a campaign that has very effectively led U.S families to needlessly spend their hard-earned dollars on an unnecessary and  exorbitantly overpriced product.

A Cheap and Easy Hack to Cut Your Heating and Cooling Bills

2/13/2016

I’ve talked before about several ways to save on winter fuel bills in my blog post here. But I am very pleased with myself today since I have just found an easy, cost-effective fix for a heating problem we have had at one of our rental units.

I’d like to share it here so that anyone can use it to help reduce their own heating or cooling costs. It's an excellent fix for seldom-used doorways or windows, in particular, but could be used in any number of places in the house where cold air is seeping in.

Or heat, for that matter.

It's dirt cheap and easy to do, too.  And could be combined with some creativity to make a long-term solution.

A winner, as far as I'm concerned.

Suggestions for Being Romantic on a Budget

With Valentine’s Day almost upon us, romance is in the air. I thought I’d share this article  and this one from the Better Business Bureau about possible scams that sprout up at this time of year, and ways you can get the best bang for your buck when spending money for this holiday.

All too often, in our the desire to prove our love to a significant other, we end up buying things on impulse and/or paying way more than we should.

And sadly, in this age of the internet, scammers are more than ready to separate us from our money.

If you are interested in buying flowers, buying locally will almost certainly save you money over the national florists, as the first article points out.

Savings with Real Cheese

2/3/2016

It's common not to think about each individual item in our shopping cart and the cost it adds to our bill. But over time, and cumulatively, even minor purchases and expenses can run up to substantial amounts of money.

Even $5 a week savings on a grocery bill is $260 a year. And you can pretty much bet that there are many examples of how we waste that amount of money each week without even realizing it or thinking about it.

So the totals for unnecessary spending can be many hundreds or even thousands of dollars over the course of a year, and certainly over several years.

In other words, it pays to sweat the small stuff when it comes to our budgets.

So, here’s a money-saving tip on one food item most families buy regularly that has the potential to put quite a lot of money back in your pocket. And in the bargain, it can also help you maintain your waistline.
